"Association" is listening to your body, monitoring its every twinge and ache while shutting out all extraneous details. It's what top athletes do in races.
"Dissociation" is tuning out the pains of the body, by talking to our running partners, thinking through problems, looking at the view, dodging the traffic, watching the squirrels, mentally singing, really singing, communing with nature, generally daydreaming. It's what we all do to get through our runs. You need to learn how to do it.
