Race Report: Southampton Fast Twitch

This weekend as you will have all seen a number of us took part in the Southampton Fast Twitch put on by Concept Sport.

I was hopeful in the week leading up to it and had been feeling good - However things did not start very well after getting NO (0) sleep the night before - so as I watched my phone hit 5am I was glad to get up and get out of my house (feeling quite sick).

Rich and I were early (many thanks for lift) - which meant I had plenty of time to drink some caffeine and feel a bit more like I could do this race!

Jumped into the pool - glad that all the waiting around was over - but within 4 lengths thought I was going to be sick - managed to control breathing well and just about stop myself being sick and get out in good time (very pleased)

Into transition and out on the bike - I may have been first out in my wave :-)

2 people passed me during the ride, one of them was far to quick but the other I pegged the distance and as i drank more liquid the feeling of sickness slowly decreased mile by mile.  I started to close the distance and as I hit the Hill at Hill Top I had him i my sights - however my chain came off and the 15-20 seconds lost destroyed my chance of catching him.

As I came into transition I could see him ahead and was almost feeling ok now.  A quick in and out and I could see him so I chased him - however he was clearly a stronger runner and the gap slowly but surely grew and I realised I would have to focus on pushing myself to the end and not racing the people around me,

I have never been so glad to see the finish line in my life - And although I thought I had done ok I was sure I could have done better had I not been feeling so rubbish.

I was over the moon when results cames up yesterday - 33rd overall and 7th in age group which is an improvement over last year and reflects my increased training which is nice - But part of me thinks what if..........

Oh well always next year! (although tempted by Relays)

Follow-Up:
The cycle run times are up - remember bike time includes both transitions (was confused for a few moments)
Bike was a bit slow compared to others around me - but over the moon with my run 20:54 - 2 minutes and 26 seconds faster than last year - Woo Hoo!

Ok, in what crazy world did swimming suddenly become my strongest discipline?! Most disappointed with the 22 min 30 sec run. Suddenly concerned that Dan is going to beat me in the Great South :P I think it took far too long for my legs to get going after the bike. Something to work on next year I suppose.

My mood is slightly improved by seeing that a member of the Hants Police Tri club got done for dangerous cycling :) Now we know why they won't let us cycle down the A35...
