Membership FAQ > Useful Information > I'm just a beginner. In fact I've never completed a triathlon. Do I need to be an experienced triathlete, or can anyone join?
The club has members of a wide range of abilities. Some members were novices (with no race experience of Triathlon), while some are competing in Triathlon or Duathlon at the World Championships for their age group. In between there are a wide range of members with varying abilities and fitness levels.
We do expect you to want to take part in triathlons and to quickly agree plans to do this – we are a multisport club after all. If you just want to swim or do a general keep fit regime, then a swimming club or gym might be better suited. We will help and support you in planning ahead for your first race, or improving your current level of performance.
What we all have in common is that we enjoy the sessions and have fun training and racing together. For the swim sessions you need to be able to swim a steady 200m front crawl (slow is fine!) and to do around 800m in a session. That allows you to fit into a session with around 1600-1800m swimming (more for the faster lanes) and have a few breathers. If you can achieve this, you should quickly be able to build up to swimming a whole session. The total distances is ALWAYS broken up into smaller chunks, and different drills to improve technique
